I bought a registration number from you. Can I put plates on my car and use it straightaway?

when can i put number plates on my car

Can I put new number plates on my car straight after I buy?

No. Buying a private registration number is just the first step. At this point the registration number has been secured for you. But it has not been transferred to your car. The DVLA's records must be updated to reflect the new registration number, before you can display the plates on your car.

What happens after I buy?

The next step is to have your car re-registered under the new number. You cannot put new number plates on the car until this has been done.

If we are sending you a Certificate for your private number plate, you will need to send it to the DVLA. You will also need to send your vehicle documents. We will provide you with full instructions on how to do this after you buy. Or we can do this for you.

If we are arranging the transfer of your registration number for you, we will request your vehicle documents. We will take care of change for you, and let you know when the transfer is completed. We will send you official DVLA notification. Then you can swap your plates over on your car.

What happens when the number plate is put onto my car?

The DVLA’s computer systems are updated to the new registration number. And you will receive replacement documents for your vehicle (V5C Registration Document and MoT).

Is there anything else I need to do?

All you have to do is tell your insurance company that the registration number plate for your car has been changed. They will update their records and send you an updated Policy Schedule.
