How long to sell a number plate?

Do number plates sell quickly?

Here's a question we're asked time and again....

"How long will it take to sell my number plate?"

The first thing we would say is.... personal number plates take a little time to sell. It's not like selling cars.... or anything else. Each number plate is unique, and its appeal will be different to each individual buyer.

So, when it comes to selling number plates, you will need patience!

On average, it takes 9-12 months to sell a number plate.

What affects how quick my number plate sells?

1 The most obvious - price.

This applies especially if there are many similar number plates for sale, and there's no reason to choose one over another. A good example of these is Irish number plates which are easily available. Although Irish number plates that make a shortened name like KAZ or GIL will fetch a better price, there are still plenty around keeping prices low compared to prefix number plates.

Our advice:
Compare your number plate with others for sale. And price yours competitively if you want a buyer to choose yours over another similar number plate for sale.
If you're suggesting your number plate makes a name or word, think about how well it matches the word (what we call the 'quality'). See How much is my number plate worth? for more detail.

2 Price bracket

This is different to price.
High 'quality' number plates will naturally attract a higher selling price. For instance a good number plate for a common name such as Mark or Sarah.
But there are fewer potential buyers with a budget of £1000's to buy a private number plate. So registration numbers that are in a higher price bracket, such as exclusive dateless no 1 registration numbers, will take longer to sell.

Our advice:
Price your number plate realistically - get professional advice on the value of the number plate. And be patient!

3 Who will your number plate appeal to?

Some number plates will appeal to specific groups of people. What type of car is your number plate likely to be on? How much are those groups of people likely to spend on a personal number plate? Is it a large group of people, or a select small group? For instance, take a look at our Power and Speed number plates.

Our advice:
Look at similar types of number plates to help you decide on the asking price for your number plate.

4 How many different groups would your number plate appeal to?

Your number plate may appeal to more than one particular group. That will make it easier to sell.
For instance, a TVR number plate will appeal to a TVR owner. but a HOT number plate will appeal to a range of different people. So you're likely to sell your number plate more quickly.

5 Number plate style

There's a general preference for certain number plate styles, over others. In general, dateless registration numbers are by far the most desirable. Prefix number plates are also now becoming more sought after.

It's a mix of all these things that affect how quickly your number plate will sell. As a rule of thumb, allow at least 9-12 months to sell your number plate. And if your registration number is a little higher priced, allow a lot more time. It's not unusual for a registration number to take 3 or 4 years to sell!
