How much is a prefix number plate worth?
Prefix style number plates were introduced in 1983, following on from
suffix number plates. The year identifier was moved from the end of the registration number to the beginning. Hence the term prefix.
The value of any prefix registration number depends on the letters and the number of digits, whether they can be constructed to make a word or name.
So what determines how much a prefix number plate is worth?
These are the main factors you need to look at when you are considering how much your personal number plate is worth:
 |
Is your personal number plate a name number plate? |
 |
Is the registration number a word number plate? |
 |
Who would the number plate appeal to? |
 |
If not a name or word, how popular are the initials? |

prefix style name number plates |
Some prefix registration numbers can make well known names, such as:
S4 RAH or T3 RRY
Personal number plates like these will be worth £10,000's. The number 3 is the perfect substitute for the letter E. See our full list of
number plate letter substitutions, for more detail.
There are many more number plates that make 3-letter (shortened) names such as T9 ANG or Y777 BEN. These ones are in high demand because they are more affordable, but still look great.
The value of these prefix number plates is affected by the first half of the registration number - mainly the number of digits and their appeal. Certain prefix letters are also more desirable than others.
For example, compare registration number plates A4 JAK and R333 JAK. A4 JAK (which has just 1 digit after the prefix) should be valued higher than R333 JAK (which has 3 digits). The letter A is also more desirable because it's an early prefix letter. The A4 also relates to an Audi model - adding to the
number plate value.

prefix style word number plates |
If the combination of numbers and letters in the registration number make word, they could appeal to potential buyers. How much appeal depends on the word itself.
Here are a couple of examples:
T777 GER - this is a lower-buget option for the word TIGER, compared to T1 GER.
M1 WEB - this registration number can be interpreted as 'MY WEB'. The word WEB might appeal to a website designer or a spider lover!
If your prefix number plate doesn't represent a name or word, it could be someone's initials. The value depends on how common the letters are.
For instance there will be more buyers who have the initials PSR than URF. So, it stands to reason that, all else being equal, a prefix number plate
P4 PSR would be valued higher than P4 URF.
The number of digits (and the appeal of the numbers themselves) before the letters also affect the value. So P4 PSR would be valued higher than P24 PSR.
