Buying number plates

Number plate purchases

You can reserve a registration number by making a part payment. A registration number is not considered to be reserved until deposit / full payment has cleared.

Any vouchers must be declared at the time of purchase. They cannot be redeemed at a later date. The value of the (valid) voucher will be deducted from the outstanding balance, on presentation.

When you make a part payment, The Plate Market will hold your registration for a period of 10 days from when the payment was taken. If you then fail to pay the balance within 10 days, payments are non-refundable and you may lose the registration number.

We will send you further instructions on how to pay the balance.

Alternatively, you can pay the full amount.

We are obliged to tell you that, once a purchase is placed for all registration marks the registration is deemed to be specifically to the requirements of the purchaser. Therefore it is considered a personalised item. This means under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and additional charges) Regulations 2013 if the purchaser does not process with the transfer of the registration mark after paying part / full payment or fails to supply the documentation required by the DVLA for transfer then no part of the payment is refundable as the service commences immediately. Your contract begins on making the first payment. Ordered registration marks cannot be refunded or exchanged. Upon receipt of an order, the purchaser is agreeing to give us informed consent to waive their 14 days cooling off period.

As the purchaser, you are advised to refrain having number plates made up until the completion of the transfer has been confirmed in writing from the DVLA or The Plate Market Ltd.

Prices are subject to change without notice. Although The Plate Market Ltd make every attempt to ensure that prices advertised are correct, the occasional mistake can occur due to the large volume of registration numbers available. If a customer purchases a registration mark that is subsequently found to be incorrectly priced, The Plate Market liability is limited to a full refund of any monies paid.

All registration numbers are sold subject to availability. The Plate Market Ltd can not guarantee the availability or the successful transfer of a registration number. In the event that we are unable to fulfil an order, The Plate Market Ltd will not be liable for any losses caused. Nor will The Plate Market Ltd be responsible for any damages, interest, or expenses incurred. If a customer purchases a registration mark that is subsequently found to be unavailable, The Plate Market liability is limited to a full refund of any monies paid.

Payment

You can pay be debit card / BACS / cheque.

There is no charge for debit card payments. On making a part payment, your registration mark is reserved on your behalf.

We ask you to send any outstanding payments and required documentation to The Plate Market Ltd within 10 days of reserving your registration mark. We strongly advise that you use the recorded delivery service for this. If we do not receive the outstanding balance within 10 days, we reserve the right to cancel the contract. Your registration mark will be lost, and no refund will be made. The Plate Market Ltd also reserves the right to enforce the contract.

If we receive full payment within 10 days, but do not receive the requested documentation, we will hold the registration for a period of 21 days. We reserve the right to then place the registration mark onto a retention certificate at your expense. It will then be your responsibility to arrange the transfer of the registration to a vehicle before the certificate expires.

To process your card payment through the website, we will refer you to a dedicated secure service provider, who will take payment via a secure sever (SSL) connection to ensure the safety of your payment on-line.

Even greater security can be gained by using Verified by Visa or MasterCard Secure Code. Once registered, you will be prompted to enter your password at the checkout to ensuring that no one else can use your card.

While every effort is made to ensure the safety of your credit card transaction, The Plate Market can not accept liability for any loss or damage incurred as a result of using the secure payment mechanism.

Number plate transfer

Transfer of registration number will not begin until full payment has been received from the buyer.

The buyer is responsible for payment of DVLA transfer fees (unless specifically stated otherwise), and producing the required documentation for the vehicle onto which the registration number is to be transferred. The buyer is responsible for the validity of the vehicle documents, and the cost of the return of any documents should this be necessary.

The Plate Market Ltd shall be responsible for handling the transfer of the registration number, and will make every attempt to complete the transfer as soon as possible. However, we cannot guarantee a specific timescale. The Plate Market Ltd will not be liable for any losses caused due to delay or if the DVLA revokes the right to the registration number. Nor will The Plate Market Ltd be responsible for any damages interest or expenses incurred.

A replacement V5/C Registration Document will be supplied by the DVLA, directly to the Registered Keeper of the vehicle.

The buyer should be aware that the Secretary of State (or their Agents the DVLA as keeper of the records) may evoke the right to a registration mark at any time, for whatever reasons, and that The Plate Market Ltd cannot be held responsible in the unlikely event of this occurring.

All liabilities will end on authorisation of the transfer by the DVLA.

As the purchaser, you are advised to refrain having number plates made up until the completion of the transfer has been confirmed in writing from either DVLA or The Plate Market Ltd.

In the event that we are unable to complete the transfer within 12 weeks from receipt of your completed documents, and provided the buyer is not responsible for the failure, we will refund payment in full and return documentation. Any fees paid to the DVLA will be refunded to the buyer directly by the DVLA at a later date.

Number plates

It is the responsibility of the buyer to have number plates made up, and fitted to the vehicle. The Plate Market Ltd can supply number plates, at additional cost. The Plate Market Ltd is not responsible for the fitting of the number plate, or providing guidance on how to do this. On ordering number plates, it is the responsibility of the buyer to inform The Plate Market Ltd if the number plate size differs from the standard size of 520 x 111mm (20 ½ in x 4 ½ in).

Number plates ordered from The Plate Market Ltd will be made up and sent once the transfer of the registration number has been confirmed by the DVLA. You may request number plates to be sent out in advance of completion of transfer, if required. Should this be the case, The Plate Market Ltd will not liable for the cost of the number plates should (in exceptional circumstances) the transfer of the registration number be subsequently declined by the DVLA.

If you source your own number plates, you are advised to refrain having number plates made up until the completion of the transfer has been confirmed in writing from either DVLA or The Plate Market Ltd.

Number plate certificates (V778 and V750)

We may agree to release the V778 Retention Document of V750 Certificate of Entitlement for the purchased registration number to the buyer. Should this be the case, it is the buyer’s responsibility to transfer the registration number to a vehicle before the expiry date on the Certificate. The buyer understands that, should they fail to assign before the Certificate Expiry date, the registration number may be lost.

The Plate Market will not be held responsible for loss of the registration number as a result of expiry of the Certificate.

The Plate Market Ltd may not be able to renew the V750 / V778 Certificate, produce a duplicate, or change the details on your behalf. Should we be able to do so, this will incur administrative charges and DVLA fees.
